Why study Further Maths?

If you enjoy the challenge mathematics brings to life, a study of further mathematics will help improve your understanding of how and why mathematics works. A GCE in Further Mathematics improves your chances of entry to University, and is becoming more and more essential for courses such as Mathematics and Physics at top universities, for which a single Maths A level does not often prepare you well enough. It is arguably the toughest A level you can study and as such is a very highly regarded qualification.

 

Exam

What will I study?

AS Units

Unit 1: Further Pure 1

Content: You will be introduced to complex numbers as the square root of – 1, and will look at matrices and proof by induction – one of the most powerful mathematical tools.

Assessment: 1 hour and 30 minute examination

 

Unit 2: Decision 1

Content: Finding the best way to move through networks, transport goods and carry out projects. A lot of the unit focuses on algorithms to optimise something – carry it out as efficiently as possible.

Assessment: 1 hour and 30 minute examination

 

Unit 3: Decision 2

Content: You will study linear programming using a simplex tableau, Game theory, Network flow analysis and matching using the Hungarian Algorithm.

Assessment: 1 hour and 30 minute examination

 

A2 Units

Unit 4: Further Pure 2

Content: A much more in depth look at complex numbers and the solutions of differential equations take up much of this unit.

Assessment: 1 hour and 30 minute examination

 

Unit 5: Further Pure 3

This unit contains work on Coordinate systems, integration and further work on vectors.

Assessment: 1 hour and 30 minute examination

 

Unit 6: Mechanics 2

Content: Circular motion, simple harmonic motion and a study of work, power and energy.

Assessment: 1 hour and 30 minute examination

How will I study?

Through discussions, presentations and individual and interactive work. A lot of Independent work will be required.

 

What do I need to start the course?

GCSE grades at A* or A in Mathematics at the Higher level paper.

Mathematics offers a wide range of skills for students wishing to study any subject at degree level, including leading to a wide range of career options.
